Key Events in Ukraine

  • The Parliament failed to overcome the Presidential veto on the law introducing the institution of public prosecution service for the crimes having the sighns of corruption.
  • Temporary special commission of the Verkhovna Rada, checking the election fraud in Kryvyi Rih, proposed to the Parliament to hold special elections in the city due to the impossibility of establishing the election results.
  • The Verkhovna Rada deputies from the Petro Poroshenko Bloc  started to collect signatures for the resignation of the Cabinet. They were joined by members of the “Batkivschyna” party faction. According to head of the Poroshenko Bloc, Lutsenko , it will be possible to talk about resignation of the Government after the adoption of the budget for the next year.
  • Prime Minister Yatsenyuk said that the revised draft Tax Code will be introduced to the Parliament by the President, together with his own recommendations to it. According to him, the tax rates will take effect from the beginning of the next year, and the Code - in three months, so that the business has the opportunity to study it and to offer suggestions for its change.
  • Energy Minister Demchishin said that Ukraine will not guarantee the purchases of natural gas from "Gazprom" for proposed price because the European prices are much cheaper.
  • The National Bank left the official rate almost unchanged: 22.89 ₴/$ (-0.02 UAH), 25.04 ₴/€ (+0.13 UAH), 3.31 ₴/10 ₽.

Ukraine at War

  • The tension in the war zone in the Donbass increases. Militants shot the neighborhood of Kurakhovo with rocket artillery, the attacks on the Ukrainian army positions with the use of small arms and mortars are recorded along all the demarcation line. According to official reports, five soldiers were wounded , seven others got injuries when armoured vehicle tripped a mine in Peski.
  • In Kiev, during the SBU operation to eliminate the subversive group, which included citizens of Russia and Ukraine, the "Alpha" special forces soldier was killed.
  • According to the OSCE, militants do not fulfill the Minsk agreement in terms of withdrawal of weapons and granting the members of the mission access to monitor the dislocation.
  • After power supply to the Crimea was restored,  Russian President Putin instructed to resume the supplies of coal to Ukraine.
  • Latvia is handing over to Ukraine three powerful analog transmitters for quality Ukrainian television and radio channels broadcasting in the occupied territory in the Donbass.

  • President Poroshenko appointed former ambassador to Russia Elchenko a new Ambassador of Ukraine to the United Nations . He was appointed an ambassador to Moscow by former President Yanukovych and withdrawn in March 2014 after the occupation of the Crimea.
  • Putin ordered the Finance Ministry to sue Ukraine in case of its failure to pay the three billions of the "Yanukovych's debt”. Prime Minister Yatsenyuk said that Ukraine is ready for trial, and Russia will not get better terms than other lenders.
  • There is no unity among the European countries on the extension of sanctions against Russia for next six months, a decision about which must be adopted in December.

The Trends


  • According to the "The Ukrainian media landscape-2015" analytical report  presented by the Academy of Ukrainian Press, with the support of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Ukrainian media are not true fourth power because they are owned by the oligarchs. Ukrainian journalists proved to be not ready to war, the quality of their training is low, they are not verifying the information sufficiently and  that caused the catastrophic decline in the rating of trust in the media, which in many cases are losing the information war to Russian media propaganda.
