Key Events in Ukraine

  • President Poroshenko held an expanded meeting with the representatives of Ukraine, who will take part in the work of the tripartite group on June 2. The representatives of law enforcement agencies also attended the meeting. The President stressed the need for the strict implementation of the Minsk Agreement, the active involvement of the OSCE mission into monitoring of the withdrawal of heavy weapons and the soon release of the Ukrainian hostages.
  • Interpol refused to issue notice for the former Prosecutor General Pshonka, his deputy Kuzmin and Deputy Interior Minister Ratushnyak, because it "contradicts with the principles of the organization".

Ukraine at War

  • In Lugansk region most of the day was quiet. The fighting took place around Donetsk, Artemivsk and Shyrokine. Ukrainian troops incurred losses again  - there are dead and injured soldiers as a result of fighting in Maryinka and Shyrokine. The militants committed a provocation in Donetsk, they shelled the residential areas with mortars; residential infrastructure was destroyed, there are victims among the civilians.
  • The United Nations Office for Human Rights noted that, despite the ceasefire regime, fighting and shellings of settlements continue in Donbass . Militants commit new crimes against civilians and military personnel, including executions, tortures and human trafficking. The UN estimates that the number of victims of war in eastern Ukraine already exceeded 6,300 people. The organization records a large number of facts of Russia's participation in the conflict in the Donbass, but it has no legal force to recognize Russia a party to the conflict. Such recognition can become a ground to bring the Russian leadership to responsibility for the war crimes by the International Criminal Court.

  • President Obama promised the royal family of the Netherlands the greatest assistance in the investigation of the MH-17 flight aircraft accident in Donbass region and stressed the need not only to establish the truth, but also to bring to justice those responsible for the terrorist act.
  • Slovakia confirmed that it would retain the agreed volumes of the natural gas reversed to Ukraine. Regardless of the discounts provided by "Gazprom", the prices of the most reverse contracts are lower than those set by the Russian natural gas monopoly.
