Key Events in Ukraine

  • President Poroshenko appealed to the Constitutional Court to verify the constitutionality of recently signed law on deprivation of President Yanukovych of the lifelong title of President of Ukraine. The President’s administration explained that this was done in order to avoid a possible appeal by Yanukovych.
  • Law enforcement officers conduct search in the Kyiv Court of Appeal. The reasons for searches are not reported.

Ukraine at War

  • Clashes along the demarcation line in Donbass don’t stop. Battles continuing near Donetsk in Maryinka, Krasnogorivka, Opytne, Peski, Avdiivka, Shirokine, Berezove. In Luhansk region Stanitsa Luhanska, Troitske, Zolote, Popasna where the road bridge have been undermined, were under fire. Militants used heavy artillery, MLRS and tanks, perform aerial reconnaissance using UAVs. The shelling intensified sharply at night. According to the official report seven soldiers were wounded during previous day.
  • Another batch of  Saxon armored vehicles arrived in Ukraine which will be used to evacuate the wounded from the front line and both command and staff vehicles.
  • The United Nations declared June 20 as World Refugee Day. Committee for Refugees reported that more than 1.3 million displaced persons and more than 800 thousand refugees recorded in Ukraine. There are more than 60 million refugees and displaced persons in the world now.

Ukraine and the World

  • Lithuanian Ambassador Janukonis said that Lithuania is ready to supply Ukraine arms to set an example for other Western partners.
  • US Republican senators at a press conference in Kiev said that both houses of Congress decided to supply defensive weapons and military equipment to Ukraine, despite the corruption in the highest government ranks. But only President Obama can approve a decision to start deliveries.
  • EU Council extended the sanctions against the Crimea until the end of June 2016.
    Russian Foreign Ministry called the Western sanctions against the Crimea "discrimination" and stated that they aren’t going to return peninsula to Ukraine.
  • The head of the Russian presidential administration Ivanov announced the start of bilateral negotiations between the United States and Russia to resolve the Russian-Ukrainian conflict without the participation of "Normandy four format."  Assistant Secretary of State Nuland will present US on the negotiations, Russian side will be presented by Deputy Foreign Minister Karasin.
  • The European Commission has approved an additional financial assistance for the OSCE mission to improve satellite monitoring in the conflict zone in the Donbass.
  • Russia has deployed anti-missile complexes "Cuirass" (NATO: SA-22 “Greyhound”) and radar stations on the islands of the Arctic Ocean.

The Trends


  • Falling incomes of Ukrainians led to the abolishment of foreign tourism and the simultaneous rise of the popularity of local health resorts. However, the increase in prices for services by Ukrainian market players forced people to cancel their vacation completely. The majority of Ukrainians who are planning trips abroad will travel to Turkey, Egypt and Georgia, the European tourism reduced to a minimum due to the increase of complexity of the issuance of Schengen visas.
