Key Events of Ukraine

  • President Poroshenko delivered the annual message to the Parliament. The main points of the message are:
    • He is dissatisfied with the results of his own work as well as with the results of works of the government and the Verkhovna Rada. The Cabinet is to report on the work done in the fall.
    • The threat of large-scale military conflict persists, there are more than 9 thousand of Russian troops, hundreds of armored vehicles, units of artillery, air defense systems and rocket launchers on the territory of Ukraine. Tens of thousands of soldiers are on the alert near the border. Russia is continuously supplying militants with weapons, ammunition, fuel, mercenaries, helps in training and creating the units ready to fight. Therefore, an increase in defense spending will be provided for in the next year's budget.
    • Utility tariffs should be transparent and the mechanism of their formation will be revealed. For houses without the heat meters the recalculation should be made based on the actual duration of the heating season.
    • Out of 1,800 enterprises in the state ownership it is planned to preserve no more than 200, including the Ukrzaliznytsia and defense productions.
    • Deoligarchisation of the state management will continue.
    • The issue of joining the NATO should be solved by the referendum.
    • The natural gas supplies are diversified, Ukraine obtained a reliable European source of natural gas supply.
    • The prospects of visa-free regime for Ukrainians are real. The head of the Migration Service was dismissed, his department had the highest number of claims from the EU.
    • Knowledge of English is to become a prerequisite for admission to the civil service.
    • By 2017, Ukraine will get a 4G Standard of mobile network.
  • Poroshenko signed a law allowing the early repayment of the deposits only if the terms of the contract with the bank provided for that. Extension of the deposit agreements is possible only through their renewal.
  • The Verkhovna Rada allowed the access to the territory of Ukraine for the international peacekeeping forces, with the exception of Russian forces.
  • A law on reducing of the "green tariff" and creating of the competitive conditions of electricity production from the alternative sources was adopted.
  • MPs approved a plan of legislative support of the reforms aimed at uniting the 2020 Strategy, presented by the President, the coalition agreement and the government's program, providing the schedule for adoption of the appropriate laws.
  • According to the law on protection of the informational TV- and radio space of Ukraine the rental licenses for 162 Russian feature films and television series were canceled.
  • The Cabinet authorized the use of high-speed WiFi standard in the 5 GHz range.
  • A criminal case on illegal enrichment was opened against the former acting head of Ukrainian Traffic Police Ershov. The Prosecutor General's office announced a suspicion to former Justice Minister Lukash. Sergey Klyuev, who lost the parliamentary immunity the day before, did not go to the prosecutor's office for questioning.
  • The court is considering an appeal of General Pukach, found guilty of the murder of journalist Gongadze. Pukach claimed that he incriminated himself during the investigation. The lawyer of the journalist's wife refused the offer to send the case back for further investigation. The Court will continue the hearing of the case on June 8.
  • Metropolitan Makariy was elected a Primate of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church.
  • National Bank left the official hryvnia exchange rate against dollar unchanged: 21.01 UAH/USD, 23.78 UAH/EUR (+0,39 UAH), 3.82 UAH/RUB 10 (+0.14)UAH.

Ukraine at War

  • The situation in the fighting zone in the Donbass remains extremely tense. A short period of inactivity was followed by the intense evening and night shellings. Militants used artillery, mortars and MLRS against Maryinka, Peski, Vodyane, Berezove, Novobahmutovka, Starognatovka, Granitne, Avdeevka, Shyrokino and are conducting the air reconnaissance in all directions using UAVs. At night, militants renewed the attacks on Donetsk, there are new destructions in the city. In the area of the Donetsk airport the OSCE recorded more than 200 explosions.
  • According to official figures, in the fights in Maryinka four Ukrainian soldiers were killed  and 39 soldiers were wounded. Militants have lost a few dozen of people, more than a hundred militants were wounded, 10 armored vehicles were destroyed.
  • "Hetman Sahaidachny" frigate in collaboration with other units stopped the provocation of the warship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

Ukraine and the World


  • Two military aircrafts - MiG-29 and the newest Su-34 bomber - crashed in Russia.
  • Lithuania convened an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council on 5 June due to the escalation of the situation in the Donbass. Deputy head of the OSCE Monitoring Mission Hug will make a report about conflict in the Eastern Ukraine.
  • The EU states that the fighting in Maryinka is a serious violation of the Minsk Agreement.
  • The French company STX completed the construction of two Mistral class helicopter carriers, ordered by Russia, and is now looking for the new buyers.
  • The EU diplomatic service created a department of strategic communication with the main goal to oppose the Russian propaganda.
  • The National Federation of Ireland claimed that they received a bribe from the head of FIFA Blatter.
  • A spokesman for the Russian President Peskov said that Putin, in response to the adoption by the Verkhovna Rada of the law on admission to the territory of Ukraine of NATO forces, can ask from the Federation Council a permission to use the Russian military contingent abroad.
  • Canadian Prime Minister Harper objected to the return of Russia to the G7 global club for as long as Putin is in power.
  • The White House announced that US President Barack Obama at the summit of the "Big Seven" plans to discuss the new sanctions against Russia.
