Key Events of Ukraine

  • President Poroshenko signed a decree, putting into force the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of 6 May 2015 on the adoption of the National Security Strategy of Ukraine. The document provides for national security in foreign policy, economic and energy security, cyber security, security of information resources and critical infrastructure. Joining the EU and creation of conditions for joining the NATO are named in the list of the main objectives of the Strategy. In the three-month the Marine Doctrine of Ukraine will be adopted .
    According to the NSDC decision, a commission on military-industrial complex is to be created. The measures have been taken to finance the prosthetic care for the ATO participants, to identify the remains of the victims, to create a database for accounting the troops participating in the military operations. Absolute fulfillment of the defense orders for 2015, including the funding for the purchase and repair of military equipment, is imposed. The heads of the military-civilian administrations of the frontline settlements, in particular, Avdeevka, Krasnogorivka, Krymske, are appointed.
  • A closed meeting of business community with President Poroshenko was held in Kiev. It was organized by the European Business Association and the American Chamber of Commerce.
  • The Government of Ukraine announced about creation of the national mobile network for the public authorities which is to be launched by the end of the year.
  • The State Statistics Committee reported that in April 2015 the real wages in Ukraine  decreased by almost 30%, compared to March 2015 the wages decreased by almost 10%. The losses of companies compared to the same period of last year increased by 3 times - to  UAH 386 billion.
  • In Ukraine, the order of free registration of property rights for real estate of citizens, built before 2011 without a building permission, came into effect . The list of objects includes the built private homes and cottages.
  • The Court re-arrested the assets of the son of former president Yanukovych . The Prosecutor's Office is investigating the actions of the court of appeals judges who made the obviously unjust decision to unblock the assets.
  • Ukraine is preparing to issue the Eurobonds worth $ 1 billion against the guarantees of the US government soon
  • Ukreximbank announced about the successful restructuring of the part of its Eurobonds with security dating 2015, 2016 and 2018, and expects to save over three years up to $ 1.5 billion. Debt restructuring is carried out under the program of cooperation with the IMF.
  • The official hryvnia exchange rate continues to decrease slowly: 21.42 UAH/USD (+0.29 UAH), 23.41 UAH/EUR (+0,21 UAH), 4.25 UAH/RUR 10 (+0.01 UAH).

Ukraine at War

  • The fighting with the use of heavy armoured vehicles and rocket launchers took place near Mariupol and in Luhansk region. Militants continued the shellings of  Avdeevka, as a result, one Ukrainian soldier was killed and 12 were wounded.
  • Russian consul visited the main intelligence directorate of the Russian General Staff military, detained during the fight near Schastye. After the meeting, he said that the issue of their exchange will not be discussed until the end of the investigation.
  • NSDC Secretary Turchinov stated that the decision to ban the supplies of components for the Russian military-industrial complex by Ukrainian enterprises is final. Ukrainian defense industry was deliberately brought to bankruptcy in order to facilitate the Russia's aggression in Ukraine and the loss of Ukraine’s independence. He called the statement of Russian President Putin about the loss of positions by the Ukrainian military-industrial complex due to the termination of cooperation with Russia inadequate.

  • President Obama and NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg blamed Russia in aggressive position in the conflict in the east of Ukraine, stating that the Minsk agreements could still be a way to achieve peace, despite the systematic violations of the ceasefire regime by the  militants controlled by Russia.
  • The US Department of State greeted the decision of France to cancel the supply of Mistral-class helicopter carries to Russia. Russia demands from France a compensation for the repudiation of the contract.
  • Deutsche Welle reported that at the G7 meeting, which will be held on May 27-29 in Dresden, there is no plan to increase the amount of assistance granted to Ukraine.

The Trends


  • According to the top managers of medium and large companies, present at "The President and the business: An open dialogue" meeting, Poroshenko tried to prove that the economy is not the area of his activities, but he is interested in reforms, in particular in the fight against corruption in the judicial system, and eliminating the abusive practices in the customs and fiscal services. He answered some critical questions, but some issues remain unresolved, such as the issue of rental payments for the natural resources and the issue of the civil aviation. According to one of the participants, he gave a lot of promises, and many times repeated the theses that deregulation would simplify the business activities and the new leadership would defeat the corruption.
