Key Events of Ukraine

  • The Parliament adopted a law, according to which the government is allowed to suspend the payments on the foreign debts until the July 1, 2016. Prime Minister Yatsenyuk believes that a moratorium on payments is needed in case Ukraine is unable to come to agreement  with creditors.
  • Two out of three members of the Supreme Council of Justice on the quota of the Verkhovna Rada, put forward by two main parliamentary parties, were appointed.
  • The Verkhovna Rada appointed the head of the Antimonopoly Committee - this position got the former General Counsel of the "ArcelorMittal Kryviy Rih" enterprise Terentyev. As a new head of the State Property Fund appointed the former head of the State Fiscal Service Bilous, who was dismissed from office by the Yatsenyuk’s government in February 2015
  • National security, defence and law enforcement agencies asked the Ministry of Finance to allocate for them additional 17 billion USD.
  • Ukraine increased the imports of Russian natural gas by nearly a third.
  • Japan granted Ukraine the credit guarantees for $ 1.5 billion and additional $ 316 million for the stabilization of the national economy.
  • The hryvnia exchange rate after a sharp fall on Monday slightly returned to previous positions: 21.25 UAH/USD (-0.87 UAH), 23.76 UAH/EUR (-1,43 UAH) 4.32 UAH/10 RUR (-0.17 UAH).

Ukraine at War

  • As a result of frequent militants attacks and shellings the losses of the Ukrainian army are growing every day. Fierce fighting continues in Shyrokine. During the fighting near Zolote and Katerinivka at least six Ukrainian soldiers were killed, several were seriously injured, some could not be evacuated from the battlefield. According to official data, yesterday 10 soldiers were wounded .
  • Donetsk fell under the shelling from the territory controlled by the militants, fighting continues near the city and the airport. Military clashes are reported along all the demarcation line, Russian troops and militants controlled by them carry out intensive fighting reconnaissance, regroup the forces, move the reserves to the fighting line and conduct the air reconnaissance using UAVs. Russian EW units conduct consecutive broadcasting blackouts in different areas.
  • The EU allocated € 1 million for reconstruction of the housing destroyed during the militants shellings of Mariupol.
  • Russian commandos, captured in the Luhansk region, are not prisoners of war and will stand convicted of a terrorist attack. Russian consulate in Kiev demanded a meeting with the detainees.
  • The observers of the OSCE mission are still unable to carry out an inspection of the Russian-Ukrainian border because of the ban of the militants.
  • The authorities of the so-called DNR plan to launch its own mobile network using the repeaters of the  "Kyivstar" and, possibly, MTS mobile operator, they claim that currently the network is working in the test mode.

  • Foreign Minister Lavrov said that terrorist Donbass "republics" should become a part of Ukraine on the conditions put forward by them, and taking into account the amendments to the Ukrainian Constitution which they are preparing.
  • In Minsk humanitarian subgroup finished its work, the negotiations on the prisoner exchange continue.
  • After the Saudi Arabia’s announcment about the  increase of the oil extraction to the ten-year maximum, oil prices on the world markets began to decrease again.
