German Minister of Foreign Affairs Steinmeier believes, that conflict in eastern Ukraine could be resolved via political route.

Ukraine

  • State Office of General Prosecutor arrested assets of the VETEK company amounting to 2 bln. UAH, belonging to Kurchenko, closest friend of the son of ex-president Yanukovych, accusing the legal entity of illegal accusation of the state property on a mass scale.
  • National Bank continue to strengthened Ukrainian hryvnia via currency interventions: 12.95 UAH / 1$ (+12 cop), 17.33 UAH / 1€ (+17 cop), 3.59 UAH / 10 RUR (+4 cop).
  • Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration, announced during the briefing, that extended top level meeting of EU, Ukraine and the “Eurasian Trinity” (Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia) is being planned for August 26, aimed to discuss implementation of Ukrainian association agreement with the EU, energy security and conflict in Donbass.

Kyiv

  • Based on the law suits from the State Office of General Prosecutor of Ukraine, Kyiv Economic Court concluded as illegal the deals with securities of “Kyivvodokanal” PLC and “Kyivgas” PLC and decided to give back the ownership of these enterprises to the Kyiv community.
  • Hailstorm of false mining calls goes on - this day subway stations “Hydropark” and “Khreshatyk” were closed.
  • As per the latest research, published in The Economist, Kyiv ranked 124th among 140 cities best fitting for living. The list was led by Melbourne and Vienna, the worst was Damascus.

War in Ukraine

  • Ukrainian Army successfully advances within city lines of Donetsk, Luhansk, Makyivka, Ilovaysk, Yasinuvata, Gorlivka and Pervomaysk, heavy fights are ongoing with engagement of artillery. Terrorists sporadically shell residential areas with mine throwers and multiple rocket launchers “Grad”. Subversive groups of Ukrainian Army are active in cities controlled by the terrorists. Ukrainian Armed Forces successfully expelled the tank attack of terrorists near the Saur Mohyla, even though it was supported by artillery from the Russian side of the border. As reported by the Financial Times, wounded in Luhansk region terrorists are being transferred for treatment to the hospital in Donetsk of the Rostov region in Russia.
  • Crimean occupation authorities “nationalized” Crimean gas pipelines owned by the «Crimgas» company, belonging to Ukrainian oligarch Firtash.
  • Head of the Bakhchisaray district administration Umerov declined to collaborate with the occupation authorities.

International

  • German Minister of Foreign Affairs Steinmeier believes, that conflict in eastern Ukraine could be resolved via political route.
  • Rosselchoznadzor accused Republic Belarus in re-export of prohibited produce from the EU to Russia, challenging the food security of the Russian Federation.
  • Current Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey Davutoğlu could most probably become the next Prime Minister. Elections of the Head of the ruling AKP party, who’ll automatically become the Prime Minister, are planned for the 27th of August. Turkey for the time being abstained from the sanctions against Russia.

Trends

  • The EU officials are sure to be able to de-escalate the conflict in eastern Ukraine. President of Finland Niinistö have been selected as the main negotiator. But for the Russian President any agreements and negotiations are serving as coverage for military equipment and mercenaries supply to Ukraine, at the same time Europe, depending on Russian gas, can’t terminate the collaboration with Russia, that is serving as a strong basis for the Russian political blackmailing.
